Laparoscopic Surgery or MINIMALLY INVASIVE Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery is a less invasive surgical approach than conventional open surgery. It allows the surgeon to view the inside of the body through small incisions, typically 0.5 to 1 cm, resulting in less surgical trauma and a faster postoperative recovery.
The introduction of laparoscopic surgery has significantly reduced the need for conventional open surgery in many procedures. It has transformed the treatment of numerous conditions, from the way the abdominal wall is accessed to how tissues are dissected and handled. This approach allows surgeons to manipulate tissues more delicately, minimize unnecessary blood loss through advanced vessel-sealing and dissection technologies, and ultimately reduce surgical trauma.

Given these advantages, it is understandable that laparoscopic surgery has rapidly expanded and gained widespread acceptance for a wide range of surgical procedures.

HOW IS LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY PERFORMED?
Traditional open surgery generally uses a single larger incision to access the abdomen. In contrast, laparoscopic surgery uses several small incisions measuring approximately 0.5 to 1 cm.
A tubular instrument called a trocar is inserted through each incision, providing access for specialized surgical instruments and a small camera called a laparoscope, which allows the surgeon to view the inside of the body. At the beginning of the procedure, the abdomen is inflated with gas to provide adequate working space and visibility.
Using specialized surgical instruments, the surgeon can remove tissue, excise tumors, and perform other procedures. In certain cases, one of the incisions may be enlarged to allow the surgeon to insert a hand into the abdomen. When a hand-access port is used, the procedure is known as hand-assisted laparoscopy. Although this incision is larger than the other laparoscopic incisions, it is typically smaller than the incision required for traditional open surgery.
Not every patient is a candidate for laparoscopic surgery. Each patient's individual circumstances must be carefully evaluated to determine the most appropriate surgical approach.

Laparoscopic surgery has traditionally been widely associated with gallbladder surgery. However, advances in surgical techniques have expanded its use to the treatment of many different conditions and procedures, including:

IS LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY SAFE?
Laparoscopic surgery is considered as safe as traditional open surgery when appropriately indicated and performed by a qualified surgical team.
At the beginning of a laparoscopic procedure, the laparoscope is inserted through a small incision so the surgical team can inspect the area and determine whether the operation can be performed safely using this approach.
If significant inflammation is present or other factors prevent the surgeon from clearly visualizing the anatomical structures, it may be necessary to make a larger incision and convert to open surgery in order to complete the procedure safely.
