Bariatric Protocol
The phases of bariatric surgery range from preparation to long-term follow-up. They can be divided as follows:
Preoperative Phase (Before Surgery)
Multidisciplinary Protocol:
Evaluation by specialists and laboratory testing (bariatrics, nutrition, psychology, internal medicine, cardiology, etc.).
Comprehensive Preparation:
Adjustments in nutrition, lifestyle habits, and emotional support to help patients reach surgery in the best possible condition.
Intraoperative Phase (During Surgery)
Surgical Procedure According to the Approved Method:
Duration:
1 to 2 hours
Hospitalization:
1 day stay on average, depending on the type of surgery and evolution.
Gastric Sleeve, Gastric Bypass, among others.
Postoperative Phase
Immediate Recovery:
Pain management, early mobilization, and prevention of complications (thrombosis, infections, leaks).
Liquid Diet:
Introduction of clear liquids following the nutritionist’s instructions.
Supplementation:
Vitamins and mineral supplements are introduced according to the type of surgery.
Solid Food Adaptation Phase
Dietary Progression:
From puréed foods to soft foods, and eventually solid foods (4–8 weeks).
Nutritional Reeducation:
Learning to eat small portions, chew thoroughly, and prioritize protein intake.
Medical Monitoring:
Postoperative follow-up visits to monitor weight, nutritional status, and overall health.
Long-Term Maintenance and Follow-Up Phase
Weight Control:
Regular follow-up with the multidisciplinary team (bariatrics, nutrition, psychology).
Supplementation:
Especially in surgeries with a malabsorptive component (such as gastric bypass).
Physical Activity:
Gradual integration of exercise to help maintain weight loss.
Prevention of Complications:
Management of nutritional deficiencies, digestive issues, and emotional health concerns.
